My Pantry

There are some basic things I always keep on stock in my pantry, and any recipes I make usually involved a number of these items. (The grocery store is far enough away that it's challenging to get there at last minute's notice.)

  • All-purpose flour
  • Bread flour
  • Whole wheat flour

  • Rice (short grain, long grain, brown and white)
  • Pasta
  • Cornmeal (for polenta and bread making)
  • Various grains: quinoa, millet, steel cut oats, rolled oats, quick oats, 5-grain mixes

  • Vital wheat gluten
  • Instant yeast
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Oil (vegetable and olive)
  • Butter

  • Spices: cinnamon, garlic powder, basil, salt, pepper, nutmeg
  • Garlic

  • White sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Honey

  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate: chips, cocoa powder, bars (milk and dark)
  • Dried fruits: cranberries, apples, mangoes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Ground flax seed, wheat bran or oat bran (for sneaking extra nutrition into things!)

  • Canned tomatoes
  • Canned corn
  • Jarred tomato sauce
  • Canned and dried beans
  • Canned pumpkin

  • Boxed cereal
  • Milk powder (for yogurt!)
  • Yogurt

  • Carrots and hummus
  • Bananas
  • Popcorn

I probably forgot some things, but if you have these things on hand you will probably be able to make 75% of my recipes.

If you could only take 5 things with you to a desert island, what would you take? Let me know by leaving a comment or emailing me at piquantprose [at] gmail [dot] com!
